What are vein ablations?
- Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a minimally invasive percutaneous technique using thermal energy to ablate incompetent veins.
What are some indications?
- For patients with ulceration who are refractory to medical management or have recurrent ulceration, RFA of perforator veins may help heal ulcers and prevent recurrence
- Cosmetic purposes for getting rid of unsightly spider veins
- Prevention of future varicose vein formation
What needs to be done prior to vein ablation?
- You will need to have a consult with a vein ultrasonographer which we offer on site to evaluate the flow of your veins and the rule out deep vein thrombosis
How long is the procedure?
- The procedure is done at a surgery center and takes usually 30 -40 minutes
Is the procedure painful?
- The procedure is relatively painless. You will be injected with tumescent solution composed of local anesthetics around the vein. Most patients do undergo a light anesthesia and can be discharged in a few hours after the procedure.
