Don't Let Fibromyalgia Ruin Your Life
If you have fibromyalgia, you may know what it’s like to be in constant pain, or in a permanent state of fatigue. Diagnosis can be difficult, and it’s always challenging to live with a debilitating disease that’s also invisible.
At The Painless Center, with locations in Carlstadt and Tenafly, New Jersey, we believe your pain. Whether your problem is mild or severe, our providers develop an individualized treatment plan to target pain based on your symptoms and health history.
Jason Chiu, MD understands how a fibromyalgia diagnosis is life-altering, but it doesn’t have to be life-ruining.
What is fibromyalgia?
Fibromyalgia is a long-term illness that affects about five million Americans, the majority being women. This disorder is neurological and manifests itself as widespread pain and tenderness to the touch. The pain may often feel like a lot of sore muscles.
Scientists suspect that the disorder is triggered by a mixture of genetic factors and physical or psychological stress that leads to pain management changes in your body. Experiencing infection or trauma can worsen symptoms or trigger the illness because it changes how your body communicates with your spinal cord and brain. According to the American College of Rheumatology, certain brain chemicals and proteins change, and the way you feel pain becomes amplified.
Unfortunately, there is no cure, but medicines, healthy habits, and physical therapy can reduce pain and discomfort for most.
What are the symptoms of fibromyalgia?
Chronic and extensive pain are the guiding symptoms of fibromyalgia. The symptoms last for years, and they’re unpredictable. The discomfort might be different every day, with varying degrees of pain or sensitivity. That makes it difficult for people with the disorder to plan anything, whether it's everyday activities like shopping or a holiday vacation.
Muscles and tendons are significantly affected, especially in the back region. The pain is widespread, and those affected describe it as dull, burning, cutting, or drilling pain.
