If you’re suffering from venous stasis, you may be feeling pain and discomfort in your lower legs. Varicose veins can be the start of other health issues such as chronic camping and blood clots.

At The Painless Center, with locations in Clifton and Tenafly, New Jersey, Dr. Jason Chiu, a pain management specialist and anesthesiologist, can help you get through the vein ablation procedure.

What Is Vein Ablation?

Also known as endovenous ablation, this procedure is used to close the varicose veins. These are abnormally large veins that are seen in the legs. The bloodstream usually goes from the heart to the legs by arteries, and comes back to the heart through the veins. They have one-way valves that help the blood to return against gravity. When the valves leak, the blood pools in the veins, and these can become varicose.

The ablation uses energy to cauterize and close varicose veins. It is applied on patients that are looking to ease symptoms like pain, swelling and irritation on the legs. The process is completely safe and it doesn’t leave scars.

Doctors may use this procedure for cosmetic purposes. However, it is more often used to help ease symptoms such as:

  • Aching pain.
  • Fatigue.
  • Swelling.
  • Skin irritation or sores.
  • Skin discoloration.
  • Swollen veins.

It is also recommended to those who want to avoid any future health problems regarding their veins.

The Vein Ablation Procedure

Your procedure will begin with a consultation with Dr. Chiu, who will assess the flow of your veins with a vein ultrasonographer.

At the start of the procedure, the doctor will use a catheter to put energy into the targeted vein through a small wire. The heat that is transmitted and used for ablation can come from a laser or from radio waves, this is called radiofrequency. This causes a slight damage to the tissue inside the vein, and then the scar tissue will seal the vein closed.

This process takes only an hour or less, the patient will be anesthetized to not feel any pain or discomfort during the ablation. You can get back to your daily routine quickly after, but it is recommended to avoid heavy lifting or exigent exercises, and to wear compression stockings for a short period of time.
