Jason Chiu, MD

Pain Management Specialist & Anesthesiologist located in Clifton, NJ & Tenafly, NJ

Knee osteoarthritis can impact the way you walk and engage in everyday activities. And for those cases where conservative treatments don’t work, new options arise for achieving relief and comfort.

Dr. Jason Chiu and his team at The Painless Center offer the innovative GAE treatment, also known as Genicular Artery Embolization. Our top priority is your well-being, so we will make sure to personalize your plan to fit your specific needs.

What is the GAE Treatment?

For patients dealing with knee osteoarthritis, GAE, or genicular artery embolization, is an innovative treatment that can provide both almost immediate and long-term relief from your joint pain.

How Does the GAE Treatment Work?

The genicular arteries are smaller arteries that extend and connect to your knee. By embolizing these arteries (or, in other words, blocking them) with tiny gelatin beads, less blood gets to the lining of your knee.

This process has a direct effect on your joint inflammation, which is the main cause of arthritis pain. By diminishing or even removing these inflammatory changes, the pain can be successfully managed without affecting blood flow to the leg.

How Is It Done?

First of all, you must know that GAE is an outpatient procedure that lasts about one hour and is performed under conscious or twilight sedation. This means that you will be relaxed and with no pain during the procedure, but still responsive.

Your doctor will insert a small catheter into your upper thigh artery and guide the device using X-ray technology. Once they reach the genicular arteries, an interventional radiologist injects tiny beads into the arteries to reduce abnormal blood supply.

Am I a Candidate for GAE?

Candidates for GAE are diagnosed knee osteoarthritis patients, usually between 40 and 80 years old, who are suffering moderate or severe joint pain. Additionally, they must have tried conservative treatment before without considerable changes (like joint injections, physical therapy, NSAIDS, etc).

If you’re looking for an alternative to knee replacement surgery, this treatment might be ideal for you.

Wow! I am in my 60’s, fluffy, and have arthritic knees. I was always out of breath due to pain while walking. My left knee procedure is done, and I already have a better quality of life.

My mobility, endurance have dramatically improved. I am doing housework again. I now have a clean kitchen floor!
I did not wait long for the procedure, the professionalism was obvious, plus warm and friendly. I felt at ease throughout. I paid attention to the after procedure suggestions, such as no heavy lifting. There was minimal discomfort during and after the procedure.

I am thrilled with the results, and cannot wait to see what happens after the right knee is completed, and physical therapy begins.

Thank you Painless Center! Life looks better.
