Learn About Discography
Discography is a procedure that puts an injection of contrast material into the spinal discs to identify the cause of back pain. Dr. Chiu relies on real-time imaging technology, such as X-rays or a CT scan, to monitor the contrast dye and evaluate the current state of your discs.
Your spinal discs are the protective cushions that sit between your vertebrae, absorbing the shock of your movements. The discs can resist pain, but they’re vulnerable to damage from wear-and-tear caused by aging or due to traumatic injuries.
Preparing for a Discography
Prior to the procedure, Dr. Chiu will provide you the instructions and information to take in count before getting the injection. The indications are…
- Not eating or drinking anything before the appointment.
- Taking medications with a small portion of water.
- Make sure to bring any x-rays, CT scans, or MRI scans of your spine.
- Arriving 60 minutes before the scheduled exam time.
During the Discography Procedure
The treatment starts with you receiving an intravenous (IV) line into your veins that will expand the medication into the bloodstream to keep you anesthetized yet awake. The patient will lie on an exam table, the surgery team will place you in a certain position to perform a test. Throughout the procedure, they will be monitoring your blood pressure and heart rate.
Once Dr. Chiu injects the dye, he will make use of the imaging technology to evaluate the targeted discs to identify the roots of your back pain.
The Recovery Process
After the procedure is done, the medical professionals will retire the IV line, and leave you to rest before heading to your home.
It’s normal to feel pain in the injected area for a few areas after the treatment, but an ice pack and prescribed medications are indicated to treat this discomfort successfully. Dr. Chiu may quickly schedule for you a follow-up appointment to talk about your treatment plan for the damage in your disc.
