About Complex Regional Pain Syndrome

Complex regional pain syndrome translates into chronic pain in your limbs. Pain is considered chronic when it lasts longer than six months.

The condition is most common in women and middle-aged adults, rarely affecting young children or the elderly.

Causes

Causes may relate to damage or dysfunction of the central nervous system (the CNS is formed by the brain and the spinal cord) or your peripheral nervous system, which carries pain signals from the CNS to the rest of your body.
Nervous system damage is frequent after surgery, but it may also be triggered by injuries such as:

  • Cuts
  • Burns
  • Sprains
  • Fractures
  • In some cases, minor procedures can cause symptoms of CRPS, which can severely interfere with your daily routine.

Symptoms

The most common symptom of Complex Regional Pain Syndrome is a burning or pins-and-needles sensation. It may affect all or part of your arm or leg, and can worsen with touch.
You may also feel:

  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Joint stiffness
  • Changes in skin texture
  • Coordination difficulties
  • Changes in hair and nail growth patterns

CRPS Treatment Options in Clifton and Tenafly, New Jersey

Since there’s no single test to confirm complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), Dr. Chiu begins by reviewing your symptoms, medical history, and the areas where you’re experiencing pain. He may also order diagnostic tests to rule out other potential causes.
If CRPS is suspected, initial treatment may involve medications such as anti-inflammatories and pain relievers to help reduce pain and swelling.

If these medications don’t provide sufficient relief, Dr. Chiu may recommend a nerve block—an injection of anesthetic near the affected nerves to interrupt pain signals being sent to the brain.
